I agree that SEO does boil down to old school marketing, which can ultimately be seen as an exchange of value.

Social Media sites can be used for traffic, but somehow I do not look at them as permanent investment. Not that you can do seo once, but you can build seo for years and google will never stop giving you big traffic. Social media sites are so many and after some time new ones get popular instead of the current.
